We connect local communities, schools, and universities in caring for nature.

We are working to build an active network of people – from children to university students to explorers from around the world – who together protect the planet and cultivate a future rooted in community and respect for nature.

Our station El Refugio, built and managed in collaboration with the local community Tumbes, is a vibrant meeting place – for children, teachers, students, researchers, and local residents.

Our goal is to support an active relationship between children and nature, awakening their interest in ecology through practical experience.

Mauro Calderon, Tumbes

More than 200 students from the Mauro Calderón primary school in Tumbes have visited the Bosque Medincinal Refugio. There we prepare ecological activities and experiential workshops for them, which they otherwise would not have access to. We also visit their school and learn alongside the children. For example, together with the children we created the first comic about recycling, which now serves as a teaching aid. We also worked alongside the students to create a school garden, and painted a tree of human virtues.

Collaboration with the Universidad del Azuay

Collaboration with the Universidad del Azuay has been ongoing for several years. Most recently, in September of 2024, biology and environmental engineering students visited our station to investigate the water quality of local streams. The analysis results confirmed that they contained a high level of biodiversity, indicating a healthy aquatic environment. This is encouraging considering the pressure on the river due to neighboring cattle farms. Community members also participated in the research, sharing their knowledge and assisting with sample collection.

We cooperate with local communities and farmers

We work closely with local communities because we know that true rainforest protection also means supporting and empowering local people through knowledge and opportunities. Currently, we have three main local partners: Raywana – ecological guayusa production, Native Sacha – sustainable cacao and chocolate production, and Tsunki Chiriap – a cultural center of one of the local Shuar communities.

Raywana guayusa

Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is a tree whose leaves are used as a tea. It is grown almost exclusively in Ecuador and Peru. Our partner is the local producer, Raywana. He grows wayusa trees on his own land and also works with Shuar families to plant and care for guayusa in an environmentally sustainable way. Not only do we assist directly on the farm with volunteers, but we also collectively increase the commercial potential of Raywana, expand its market-access. This supports sustainable job opportunities for local residents, reducing economic pressure on the rainforest.

Native Sacha cacao

Native Sacha is an award-winning artesenal brand of cacoa and chocolate. On their plantation, cacao trees are grown with a variety of other fruit trees and plants, which not only enhance the flavor of the cocoa but also support local fauna. They only harvest cacao pods and leave the other fruits for the birds, thereby preserving the rich biodiversity of the area. We import their top-quality cacoa and chocolate to Europe, thus assisting in the development of their business beyond the borders of Ecuador.

Shuar culture

The Shuar are one of the prominent indigenous cultures of Ecuador. We closely collaborate with the Chiriap family and the Tsunki Chiriap cultural center, which aims to preserve the traditions, stories, language, and dances of the Shuar. During our jungle expeditions, we visit their center, inviting our guests and explorers to experience authentic Shuar culture.
